GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Malaki Lysher-Lovan dealt with bullies who mocked his weight, ethnicity and appearance in general.
The mistreatment continued to escalate to physical harm. He became anxious about school and his grades plummeted. His parents repeatedly engaged with the school about the issue, but bullying is extremely hard for teachers to stop in the moment, let alone prevent altogether.
Unfortunately, this scenario is fairly common leaving families like Malaki’s feeling stuck. In his case, after the physical assault, his family enrolled him with Colorado Preparatory Academy (CPA), an online public school.
Removed from that environment, Malaki’s attitude toward school improved as did his grades, he’s an A-student now.
Malaki and his family hope to share their story as a roadmap for other families who feel similarly stuck in a situation where their child is mistreated.
