Teresa Palma, Cabarrus County Schools Title III/ESL program coordinator, has received a Transformation Award from Fuel Education (FuelEd), a leading provider of online and blended learning solutions for students in grades K-12. The Transformation Award recognizes schools, districts and organizations that are successfully transforming the way teachers teach and students learn.

Fuel Education selected Palma from more than 2,000 school districts across all 50 states for this year’s awards.

Cabarrus County Schools won for its outstanding blended learning program, which uses online learning solutions to drive student achievement and support English language development. English Learners in grades 6-12 utilize the Middlebury digital learning format in a blended learning classroom. Students receive direct instruction in a project-based learning format provided by Middlebury. English Learners that are new to country have shown tremendous growth with an increase in academic performance on assessments.

“I am honored to be recognized by FuelEd as a Transformation Award winner and excited about the opportunity to highlight the success of English Learners in Cabarrus County Schools,” Palma said.

Each Transformation Award winner uses FuelEd’s portfolio of online solutions and adaptive learning tools to meet the diverse needs of their students, who represent many demographic, economic and geographic backgrounds. The winning programs are inventive in the way they use online learning to overcome a variety of challenges, whether providing students with the means to earn a high school diploma after dropping out, by filling teacher vacancies, by helping students recover credits, by differentiating instruction based on real-time progress data, or providing students with access to a wider variety of elective courses.
