Esports, short for electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games.

Esports often take the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, especially between professional players, either individually or as teams.

Although organized competitions have long been a part of video game culture, they were largely among amateurs until the late 2000s when professional gamers and spectator participation in these events via live streaming saw a major surge in popularity. saw.

By the 2010s, esports was a significant factor in the video game industry, with many game developers actively designing and providing funding for tournaments and other events.

The most common video game genres associated with esports are multiplayer online battle arenas, first-person shooters, fighting, cards, battle royale, and real-time strategy games.

In 2010, it was projected that the total viewership of Esports would increase to 454 million viewers, generating over $1 billion in revenue and with China accounting for 35% of global Esports revenue in 2020.

Despite the viewership being approximately 85% male and 15% female, female gamers have also played professionally, with the majority of the audience aged 12 to 34.

In a brave new electronic world, many colleges offer scholarships for esports, and even the US military has a Rocket League team.

GJHS students play in the Indiana Esports Network, the eSports equivalent of the IHSAA. Teams of three teams play, and game matches are best of five.

This year, the GJHS team beat Indiana Digital Learning School 3-0 with a best-ever performance. The GJHS Rockets team is undefeated in 2023, outclassing schools throughout the state of Indiana.

This year 28 students of GJHS participated in Rocket League for 2023.
