As an educator, I’m proud to live in a state where we provide many options for students to receive a quality education. We’re lucky to live in a community where education is increasingly valued.
Across Michigan, we have some of the best public school districts in the country. But that doesn’t mean the district you live in should be the ultimate factor in which educational path you take. That’s why we must protect school choice. This means that a traditional brick-and-mortar cannot be the end solution. Students deserve the right to choose to stay in their districts, but they also deserve the right to find a different option that suits their needs.
As an educator at Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy and a mother of two students that attend our local brick-and-mortar district, I’ve seen both sides of the coin up close. I’ve seen how some students thrive in an in-person learning environment, while others require a more personalized, virtual approach. Now more than ever it’s important that we protect school choice. The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t going away. Families need options to find the best opportunity for their education.
