The Importance of Professional Mentorship

Perspectives | Aug 15, 2020 | Avery

Finding a professional mentor is a great way to accelerate your career. Here’s an explanation of why mentors are so important.

Whether you find them through school, an internship, or a job, having a professional mentor is a great way to make sure that you stay on track with your career goals. While many high-achieving teens are inclined to do everything themselves, most working professionals will tell you that this way of thinking will hold you back. In fact, a study conducted by the American Society for Training and Development found that 75% of executives noted that professional mentorship was essential to the development of their career. If you, like me, struggle with asking for help, here are a few of the things a mentor can give you that you may not be able to find on your own.

1. Skills

While school or vocational training can give you a basic understanding of the skills you will need in the workplace, there are many skills that only come with time and experience. Since a trial and error approach to learning these skills can take a while, having a mentor who can show you the ropes and accelerate your learning is invaluable.

2. Perspective

At some point or another, you will find yourself at a crossroads in your career. Whether you are faced with a new, albeit intimidating, job opportunity, or you are considering starting your own business, there will be moments when you need someone else’s opinion. Having a mentor who has been through similar challenges can help you take the right risks and develop your career.

3. Their Network

Having professional connections can make or break your career. A mentor who can share the professional contacts they have accumulated over their career and speak to them on your behalf is a great way to advance your career and help you find new opportunities.

These are just a few of the benefits of professional mentorship, but hopefully, they give a glimpse into why seeking advice from your superiors is essential to professional success. While it may feel awkward at first, asking for help is a skill that every successful professional must master.
