Having Multiple Hobbies As A High School Student Can Broaden Career Possibilities

By Ayah Bouanani, Stride Student Advisor

As an online high school student, I have had lots of time, after finishing my work, to develop some of my current hobbies. As I go further into my studies, I also begin to learn how useful the hobbies I have are to my future. It can really surprise you how much your hobbies can affect your life!

Over the years that I've been with Stride, I have learned countless new things. One of these new things is how to channel my hobbies into something more. When trying to get more out of a career pathway, as a high school student, I felt stuck some of the time… due to the fact that I would struggle with knowing whether I wanted to pursue something as a job or not. Luckily, Stride provides multiple opportunities to help you find and experience jobs and/or internships that will give you a taste of working in your career field of interest.

Outside the U.S.?

For example, I have always been into working my way through my own computer system. Any parental lock or app that locks my computer is one that I naturally love to spend my time researching. Then I learn how to take multiple steps to bypass it. Actually, realizing that this was a strong interest for me was what had me thinking about pursuing cyber-security, as a next step. With the help of my teachers and my learning coach, I was able to find tons of opportunities to sharpen my skills in this viable career area!

But, as an alternate example, let's say that I tried out cyber-security but didn’t find it to be as I had hoped it would be. There would still be plenty more out there for me to try. The career and learning possibilities are endless, especially if you are passionate about finding what it is you really want to do, as a future professional. The more hobbies you have as a high school student, the better! Having more hobbies and skills just means more of a variety in the types of jobs that you can apply for, when the time comes.

Overall, Stride is an outstanding way to discover new career paths, as a high school student. This is especially true when linking your personal hobbies to what you want to do with your career! I am currently taking a Stride-powered Arts & Comics Class that I am absolutely loving! I never thought about comic design, but when I scrolled by it, while looking at classes I can take, I thought I should seize this chance to try my hand at something new. On top of that, I already have lots of artistic skills on my side, so this comic design class is completely suited to me! While still using what I know, I am learning so many new things that could possibly be very useful in the future.

Who knows? As the saying goes, your future lies in the palm of your hand...
