If you're looking to build an impressive resume, you definitely want to try to win a few awards that will show off your skills. Your school may offer awards for a few different athletic, academic, or artistic accomplishments for many students. However, if you really want your resume to shine, you will also want to investigate regional or national competitions to add accolades. If you're looking for some competitions to enter, here are five that I recommend.
1. Scholastic Art and Writing Competition
Scholastic Art and Writing was created in 1923 to recognize the artistic contributions that teens around the country make each year. They accept various types of pieces, with categories ranging from creative writing to ceramics, and offer students many different levels of recognition and awards. The competition culminates in an award show at Carnegie Hall in New York!
2. Junior Sciences and Humanities Symposium
Junior Sciences and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) is great for students interested in promoting their STEM ideas. The U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force sponsor the program, and they host several different regional and national competitions during the year. Along with recognition, these competitions can also give you access to college scholarships.
3. President’s Volunteer Service Award
If you are passionate about community service, you may be eligible to apply for the President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA). PVSA recognizes those who complete over one hundred hours of service, with bronze, silver, gold, and lifetime achievement awards. If you want to apply for this award, be sure to review the specific guidelines for eligible service activities!
4. Congressional Art Competition
If you're interested in visual arts, you should consider submitting your artwork to the Congressional Art Competition. This competition allows you to compete with other students in your congressional district to have your artwork hanging in the U.S. Capitol Building for a year. The competition is definitely steep, but it's a fantastic opportunity nonetheless!
5. Blue Ocean Competition
The Blue Ocean Competition is perfect for anyone interested in becoming an entrepreneur. Like a mini Shark Tank, the competition allows you to pitch a unique business idea and gain feedback from industry professionals and your peers. If your idea gains traction, you can even win monetary prizes to help you start your company!
