Middle school is a pivotal crossroads -- personally, socially, and academically. For me, bullying at my brick-and-mortar school took a toll, and my mom knew we needed to find a new path to navigate my teen years. Ohio Virtual Academy helped me get back on track, empowering me to forge my own path. Now as a student at Moody Bible Institute, I know the skills I earned in high school shaped the opportunities I have today in three ways:
1. Creating My Own Schedule
My high school experience was built on trust and personalized learning. OHVA challenged me with rigorous coursework, and I was able to excel academically thanks to the support of my teachers. As a communication student today, multiple professors have applauded my ability to learn topics quickly; I attribute that to my time in OHVA. It takes discipline to stay self-motivated, and I am thankful I learned that early in my education.
2. Introduction to New Technologies and Topics
Online school allowed me to familiarize myself with video editing software. This hobby led to me being the only person on campus who knew how to navigate the program. Multiple opportunities have arisen due to this expertise - job offers, as well as interpersonal communication with others.
3. Confidence in Communication
At OHVA, l found the confidence to find my place. My math teacher went the extra mile to make sure students knew he cared about their well-being outside class. Finding that support in an online classroom may be surprising, but teachers really encouraged me and helped me thrive.
When we found Ohio Virtual Academy, college seemed far away. Little did I know how much it would prepare me for a lifetime of learning, in and out of class.
