The Top Skills That Help Students Land a Job in Nursing

Perspectives | Jun 01, 2021

You’ve studied hard, gotten the proper training, and even completed the certifications to qualify you for a job in nursing, but do you have the skills to be successful? Depending on the role, skills can be technical, but they can also be practical, requiring real-world experience.

To identify the core skills for success in nursing, we worked with our partner Burning Glass to review thousands of job descriptions and identify a list of necessary, defining, and distinguishing skills in nursing that are attainable for students with less than a bachelor’s degree.

Students enrolled in the Health and Human Services pathway through Stride Career Prep gain these core skills through a combination of hands-on project-based learning, job shadowing, and certification preparation while still in high school.

Necessary skills in nursing include experience in a hospital and clinical setting, patient education, treatment planning, and CPR certification.

Through this combination of real-world training and classroom curriculum, you can start building a set of defining skills. Defining skills represent the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities of your job and in nursing include case management, acute care, patient care, and advanced cardiac life support.

This on-the-job training and experience are essential to developing the distinguishing skills that allow you to highlight your technical proficiency and set yourself apart from other candidates. As you advance, you can also begin skills in high demand specializations such as pediatrics, intensive care, and post anesthesia care.
